I can write about anything and do it well. This, I've discovered, is not just a matter of the writing talent that God blessed me with and that my parents encouraged me to develop, but also a product of my natural curiosity. There's something interesting - a riveting hook, a new angle - in every subject matter under the sun. And I've made it my job to find it.
I began my career as a general assignment reporter who covered murder trials, feature stories and the police beat. From there, I slid into a position as a reporter for a daily newspaper and began doing the one thing I'd vowed in college that I'd never do - business writing.
Life has a way of orchestrating and playing out its own practical jokes. One day, a highly-respected business reporter visited my college journalism class to speak and answer questions about her career. Snore, I thought. I will never do that!
Lo and behold, I not only ended up doing that, but I became that - a business writer. My first and best employment opportunity fresh out of college was going to work as a writer/editor for a national investment magazine. It was there that I learned the ropes and honed my skills and yes, eventually came to love writing about business, personal finance, the economy, and investing.
I've written, edited and project-managed everything from newspaper and magazine articles to press releases, brochures, blogs, columns and newsletters. I write regularly for ICLUBcentral.com and BizActions.com, am a regular columnist for StockCentral.com and - twenty years later - am still a frequent contributor for Better Investing Magazine, where it all began. Though personal finance and investment writing are my specialty, I have successfully forged my way into the worlds of real estate, health (I'm a regular blogger for The Pink Fund) and career writing as well. I also have done a good bit of feature writing - interviewing and profiling the likes of Nicholas Sparks, David Baldacci, Garrison Keillor, and Robert B. Parker - as well as everyday people with extraordinary stories.
Most recently, I have been finding my place in the publishing world. I am now officially and exclusively "repped" by literary agent Jessica Faust of BookEnds, LLC. I am working with her to develop a number of titles - from a memoir that spans the four generations of women in my family who have been identified as carriers of the Breast Cancer 1 gene, as I do, to a fictional detective series.
